Everything You Need to Know About the Silver Oak Bottle Tree
Trim up the tree and hang up the lights, the Silver Oak Bottle Tree has arrived!
The Silver Oak Bottle Tree stands tall in our Oakville tasting room
Every year, our legendary Bottle Tree helps kick off the holiday season in our Oakville winery. Made of Silver Oak bottles, it inspires so many questions from you, our fans, that we’d like to share some of our favorite Bottle Tree facts.
- Long-time tradition: Before the tree’s debut in 2008, it began with an idea—inspiration from a French bottle drying rack. Read The History of the Iconic Silver Oak Bottle Tree for more about the tree’s inception.
- A whole lotta bottles: With 576 750ml bottles and one 6L “tree topper,” the Bottle Tree is made up of a whopping 48 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon—just shy of two barrels.
- Let it glow: Green LED light strips combined with our green glass Cabernet bottles give the tree a bright holiday glow. (We modified the original design to include hooks on the inside to hang the lights.)
Green (beyond its color): We recycle used wine bottles from our tasting room to make up the tree. It takes about two weeks to save enough 750ml bottles.
The “star” on top: The original tree topper was a 3L bottle. But due to scale, it was upgraded to an empty 6L topper (a 1995 Alexander Valley Cabernet) that is saved year to year.
The elves: It takes our tasting room staff under an hour to assemble the tree. Check out the action below in our time-lapse Bottle Tree video.
Custom-made form: The rot-iron form, more than 14 feet tall, was custom-made by a local craftsman. It’s so large that it breaks down into three pieces for storage.
Bottle Tree 2.0: The Bottle Tree at our Oakville winery isn’t our original tree. The first Bottle Tree holds 464 bottles and has a new home—in the Twomey Healdsburg tasting room!
