2013 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Our 2013 has an inky black and opaque hue. It’s currently a dark and brooding wine, offering aromas of cassis, asphalt, plums and black pepper. It has a concentrated and tightly-wound core of black fruits and licorice with a very long, dense, and structured finish. Given proper cellaring, this wine should improve through 2039.
The Alexander Valley saw a relatively dry winter leading up to the 2013 growing season, with barely 20 inches of rain recorded. Though the season began early, significant frost never materialized. Summer was mild, with only a few days reaching triple digits. We harvested on a steady progression through the region, as neither heat spells nor threats of rain forced our hand. This allowed our winemaking team to pick when ripeness was in perfect balance. Drought conditions, coupled with low soil moisture and moderate temperatures during the summer and fall, created a vintage that will be remembered for structured and concentrated wines. Harvest in Alexander Valley took almost exactly a month, starting on September 11th and concluding on October 10th.
Blending and Aging
Our 2013 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Blended in early 2014, the wine was then aged for 24 months in 50% new and 50% once-used American oak barrels from our Missouri cooperage, The Oak. Early blending assures a balanced core and allows the components to achieve a seamless harmony during barrel aging. After bottling in the spring of 2016, each bottled was aged an additional 15 months before being released in August of 2017.
