We are very proud to announce that our 2009 Twomey Russian River Valley Pinot Noir was named the Runner-Up recently at the Pinot Cup competition as part of Chef Charlie Palmer’s “Pigs and Pinot” event in Healdsburg, California; distinguishing itself from among a crowd of 60 international Pinot producers.
Pigs and Pinot is a weekend-long epicurean event that kicks-off with the Pinot Cup competition. In this annual wine competition, 60 hand-picked Pinot Noirs compete in a blind-tasting in hopes to be named “the best of the best” by a renowned judging panel. This year’s panel included Jon Bonne, Wine Editor for the San Francisco Chronicle, Laurie Daniel, Wine Writer for the San Jose Mercury News and Master Sommelier, Fred Dame. This is the second year that Twomey has been selected to participate and the first year we were awarded the “Runner-Up” title!
“This was a complete shock and a great surprise,” said our CEO and President David Duncan. “Ben (Cane, the winemaker) and I were like two giddy school children!”
Twomey was established by the Duncan Family in 1999 to pursue the discovery of California varietals beyond Cabernet Sauvignon. Twomey was founded out of generations of Duncan family entrepreneurship using the same philosophy that has directed Silver Oak since 1972: make exceptional, food-friendly wines that are deliciously drinkable upon release.
Twomey’s Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc winemaker, Ben Cane, states: “The 2009 Twomey Russian River Valley Pinot Noir has a ruby color with purple highlights and a complex nose of fresh rose petals, lilacs, candied apples, sweet baking spices and a hint of peppermint. It has a rich, broad attack on the palate and notes of caramel, butterscotch and ripe, red fruit. This rich, expressive wine has a balanced finish of fruit, spice, bright natural acidity and fine grained tannins.”
We’re very proud of the 2009 Twomey Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, and all of the Twomey wines. While the 2009 Russian River Valley Pinot is sold out, Twomey will release its newest vintages of Appellation and Estate Wines, including the 2010 Russian River Valley, Anderson Valley and Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs, as well as the 2011 Estate Sauvignon Blanc on April 28th. To celebrate these releases, Twomey will be hosting a Pinot & Pizza event at both of the Twomey wineries and we invite you to come down to either Healdsburg or Calistoga to enjoy tastings of these new vintages along with pizza prepared by winery chef Dominic Orisini and his team.
We hope to see you at either our Calistoga or Healdsburg winery very soon!
