Silver Oak and Twomey September Harvest Update

We are excited to announce that harvest at Silver Oak is officially in full swing! We brought in our first Cabernet Sauvignon from a couple of the rocky blocks of our Soda Canyon Vineyard in Napa Valley on Friday, September 6th. A looming heat spell had us worried last week, but thankfully it ended up being a little less severe than advertised and our fruit made it in unscathed by scorching temperatures. Delivery of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the first of the Cabernet Franc continued to roll in throughout the end of last week from Napa, St. Helena and Atlas Peak vineyards.
In the vineyards, our continued use of Berry Sensory Analysis protocols has helped us to make sense of the effect that temperature fluctuations have had on the fruit. For example, tastings of fruit on the vine last Monday and Tuesday were very confusing because the fruit had extremely high sugars, but unripe flavors, skins and tannins, letting us know that we needed to be patient and hold off on picking for a few more days. As the week wore on, our patience was rewarded as we saw sugars in the berries drop as they rehydrated and normal ripening resumed, giving us balanced flavors and maturities by the end of the week.
Higher North in Alexander Valley, we had a crazy swing in temperature from 103 degrees on Monday to a high of 77 degrees on Tuesday; a precipitous drop that we were grateful for. We began crushing fruit from our Miraval Vineyard shortly after the heat spell abated and our Geyserville Winemaking team was very excited to use the new crusher!
At our Twomey wineries in Calistoga and Healdsburg, we have nearly finished our Sauvignon Blanc harvest and our Pinot Noir is picking up speed as we continue to bring in fruit from our Russian River Valley, Anderson Valley, Sonoma Coast and Bien Nacido Vineyards. The fermentations have begun and the young wines are already stunning!
September not only marks the beginning of harvest but also the release of Twomey’s Single Vineyard wines: our 2009 Twomey Soda Canyon Vineyard Merlot and 2011 Twomey Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir. To celebrate the release of these wines, we hosted a “Single Vineyard Saturday” release celebration at our wineries in Calistoga and Healdsburg where guests enjoyed, hors d’oeuvres, live music and the first tastes of our Single Vineyard wines.
So far, the 2013 Harvest has been spectacular! We hope you can visit and experience it with us at any of our Silver Oak and Twomey wineries throughout the Harvest season. Cheers!
